A grade 6 student, reflects on a field-trip to Dawson’s Typhoid Cemetery to look for medicine. Ollis, our guide in lichen-styled drag helped us identify, give thanks, harvest and process cramp bark for a medicinal edge in our soda samples. Thanks @gay4mushrooms for the inspiring appearance and teachings.

Thank you @jeffreypixels for collecting student quotes and narrating this project originally shown at @kiacyukon in the Odd Gallery. Big point over to @lilboohiss and #craighunter at Hätrʼunohtän zho/Robert Service School. An installation of prints and bottles from this project is now on view @rmgoshawa Thanks to @val_f_l for assistance printing the wing-like label of this energy gel bottle.

Subjected to pressure and heat - plastic, foil, glass, textiles, wood and paper are revealed differently. In the making of this piece, we wondered how a small place like Dawson could impress itself on the mass-produced materials that arrive there in a constant stream.

In a series of 13 sessions with the Grade 5 & 6 students at Hätrʼunohtän zho/Robert Service School we asked – Who decides on the ingredients of soda, the shape of its bottles, the persuasion of its advertising and the afterlife of its waste? Additionally, Whitehorse-based glassblowers @lumelstudios towed their baby dragon furnace up the Klondike Highway to demonstrate glass blowing and sculpting with students. These two bottles (lower left) are stand-ins for Hannah and Reed, the lead artists behind Big Rock Candy Mountain. Since early 2022 we have been working with collography, mono-printing, plate lithography and screen-printing to produce images of things that orbit the periphery of our projects with kids in schools.

At the top, imagine the bigger grouping of bottles as a proxy for the Grade 5 & 6 students at Hätrʼunohtän zho/Robert Service School who joined us in visiting old bottles at @dawsoncitymuseum and further-developing new designs as part of an installation at the Odd Gallery @kiacyukon here in Dawson, Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin Territory. BUBBLE ALERT 🟣🔴🟠🔵🟤⚪️🟢🟡 L BUBBLE ALERT
🟣🔴🟠🔵🟤⚪️🟢🟡

Last June we launched #popopopopop a sound-based soda developed with artists, musicians and grade 6 students at @johnamcdougall with support from @mitchellartgallery @yegarts and @boochayeg

Since then, #popopopopop has been sold at neighborhood stores, school events, holiday fairs, pop-up events and in this current double-entendre setting, the POPWAY (pedway) on MacEwan University Campus.

Thanks to curator @carolyn_______jo for your words about the development of #popopopopop and the pop-way "...students created drawings inspired by the percussive sounds of the carbonated drink. Designer @jeff.kulak has pulled elements of these drawings into a wild magnum opus of soda sound-as-visual score--as if you are walking through a bottle of POPOPOPOPOP in the collective imagination of our neighbourhood grade six students."

If you're in Edmonton and on @macewanu campus, check it out and pick up a bottle of #popopopopop at the campus store, Griffin's Landing. We’ll be announcing out-of-edmo ordering info soon.

We have been airing a weekly BUBBLE BROADCAST as p We have been airing a weekly BUBBLE BROADCAST as part of @artspeakartspeak Artspeak Radio Digest: Proximities and as behind-the-scenes research for an upcoming @bigrockcandy.mountain project. This week we are interpreting this drawing of bubbles with @melsmandrews , made by Thea, a Grade 6 student in Edmonton at @johnamcdougall . Scroll through for our zoom-vessel-jam-band and for Melissa's pics of the vessels she played to represent the big dots in the drawing. All other audio interpretations of the drawing are described in tonight's episode... tune in on Vancouver's Co-op radio, CFRO 100.5FM. 9 pm PST!

Our guest is Melissa Andrews, who is a Music and Literacy teacher at John A. McDougall School. Fun fact, she started her teaching career at that school and loves the community there so much, she has never left! She received her Elementary Music Education degree from the University of Alberta. Outside of teaching, Melissa sits on the Board of Directors for Free Footie, an organization committed to providing free after school programming using physical activity for school aged children. She also serves as a member of the Executive team for the Alberta Orff Chapter which provides quality music PD and workshops for elementary music teachers in Edmonton and Northern Alberta. In her spare time, Melissa likes to spend time with her family and friends, play the ukelele and percussion, do escape rooms, binge watch Netflix and read great books!

This project is also supported by @mitchellartgallery and @yegarts #BRCMxYEG

We learned about: the different ingredients in juice and pop; what carbonation is and what it sounds like; and the variety of ways that artists paint, draw and listen to bubbles. We also talked about: the purpose of nutrition facts panels; big-brand celebrity endorsements; and the differences between small-scale and industrial pop production.
